On June 11 , women protested in Maaret al-Numan (Idleb Governorate) against the extremists of the Front Haeat Tahrer al-Sham, a group linked to al-Nusra (formerly affiliated with al-Qaeda).
On June 8, the front launched an attack against the free army to take control of Maarat al-Numan. In response, several demonstrations took place in which women have played a leading role. This local resistance, as well as the media pressure from local journalists, pushed the Haeat Tahrer al-Sham front and Jabhat al-Nusra to withdraw from the city on Monday, June 12
Back in March 2015, when Jabhat Al-Nusra attacked the Free Army in Maaret al-Numan, women took to the streets, demonstrated in front of the Jabhat Al-Nusra headquarters and managed to expel them from the city.
Our training for women in journalism is precisely trying to support local civil society in their struggle for democracy. Here is to participate in our crowdfunding campaign: https://www.ulule.com/femmes-journalistes-en-syrie/
